Ghorepani Poonhill is a trek loved by all and is a special introduction to the actual Himalayan trek in Nepal for beginners. Being just a perfect getaway from the tourist hub, Pokhara, you will travel for a close-up view of the Annapurna region. It gives a whole lot of experience in just a few days of trekking giving spectacular views from the viewpoints: of Ghorepani and Poonhill. Even among locals, it is a popular trek, especially for the sunset/sunrise from the viewpoint.
Ghore (horse) and Pani (water), two local words are merged making the name Ghorepani. The tale is that the ancient traders used the area as a resting place where they found water for their horses. Similarly, Poonhill gets its name from Poon, the name of the nearby hill.
As you walk early in the morning for the views of snow-capped mountains from Poon Hill you will see shining Mt Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Mt Annapurna I (8,091m), Mt Nilgiri (7,040m), Annapurna south (7,219m), Annapurna II (7,937m), Annapurna III (7,555m), Annapurna IV (7,525m), Hunchuli (6,441m), Machapuchare (6,997m), Lamjung Himal (6,986m), Tukuche peak (6,920m), Dhampus Peak (6,012m) among others as the ray of sunrise touches the mountain.
As your flight arrives at Nepal Airport, Glory representative(s) will be eagerly waiting for you. They will escort you to your hotel where you can freshen up and either rest or explore the streets of our tourist hub of Kathmandu, Thamel.
Today’s sightseeing will incorporate five major locations from around two cities:
Pashupati Temple: A holy temple of lord Shive where you can see the cremation process as well as major Hindu festival events.
Swayambhunath Stupa: Also known as Monkey Temple, you have to climb up the stairs to see a stupa located at the top of a hill and explore various sculptures of lord Buddha. It is also a great location to view the entire Kathmandu City.
Boudhanath Stupa: A holy place for all Buddhists and also one of the largest stupas around Asia.
Patan Durbar Square: A historically and culturally rich city with Newari Architecture and also a home of the finest craftsmen. Krishna Mandir and Patan Museum are major places to explore.
Driving for about 7 hours, we will explore the hills, rivers, and settlements on our way. As we reach Pokhara, we can enjoy the rest of the day with a relaxing time by the lakeside, or the rich nightlife Pokhara holds.
Our journey begins with an hour's jeep ride to Naya Pul (42 km), passing through the affluent village of Lumle. As we walk, we eventually arrive at the town of Birethanti, which is situated where the Modi and Burundi Kholas converge. We continue on the main road, passing through bamboo forests, a sizable waterfall, and a swimming fissure. As we continue on our journey, the trail progressively ascends the valley's side, leading us to Tikhedhunga.
We will be conquering stone stairs today, so it will be a challenging day. The trail first crosses a suspension bridge before climbing a steep stone staircase to Ulleri, a 2080-meter-high community primarily made up of Magar people. The trail gradually climbs through fields, rhododendron forests, and meadows after passing the village. Moreover, we come across two lovely streams after a leisurely hour-long walk from Ulleri. Around the cultivated areas, there's a good chance you can spot a variety of birds if you're an avid birdwatcher. After a quick ascent to Nangethanti, where we have lunch, we continue on to Ghorepani, which is at an elevation of 2850 meters. The stunning view of Dhaulagiri I, Annapurna I, Tukuche, Nilgiri, Hiunchuli, and Tarke Kang is visible from Ghorepani.
We will witness the dawn from Poon Hill and the fleeting moment when the first ray of sunlight passes over the mountains, giving us an early start to the day. It's only a 45-minute climb to one of the best mountain views. Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Annapurna I, Mt. Nilgiri, Annapurna South, Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, Hunchuli, Machapuchare, Lamjung Himal, Tukuche, and other Himalayan giants will be visible to us. Following a hearty viewing session, we will eat breakfast at Ghorepani and then hike through a rhododendron forest that is home to over 15 different species of rhododendron before arriving at Tadapani. Upon arriving at Tadapani, we will be treated to breathtaking views of Huinchuli, Machapuchare (Fishtail 6,993m), and Annapurna South (7,219m).
There will be a steep descent that begins in a dense rhododendron forest. Depending on the time of year we visit, we may be pleasantly surprised to see some cherry blossoms in bloom by afternoon on the slopes across the gorge. We continue our trek and eventually arrive at the village of Ghandruk, which is primarily home to Gurung people and is an undulating settlement of stone houses. The Gurung people have simple yet rich cultural traditions, which we learn about through walking through the village and visiting the Gurung Museum in Ghandruk, in addition to taking in the breathtakingly up-close and breathtaking views of Fishtail, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli mountains.
We drive back to Pokhara after our trek from Ghandruk to Naya Pul today. The entire journey to Birethanti will be downhill. We climb a stone slab-paved staircase that winds through the village and eventually past terraced farms. From Ghandruk, it descends almost continuously to the Modi Khola river valley. Some of us would have felt as though we had completed a downhill marathon by the time we arrived in Birethanti. However, our marathon is still ongoing. It takes us thirty minutes to walk from Birethanti to Nayapul. This is the end of the walking journey at Nayapul. Then, we travel to Pokhara by car from Nayapul. We can spend the evenings by the Pokhara Lake.
Ending the trek, we drive back to Kathmandu or simply take a 20 minutes flight to Pokhara.
