The environment in Nepal has gone from bad to worse, and holy moly that escalated quickly. In less than 30 hours the Nation was transformed from stable and entertaining state to a rogue one. As a resident of this country, we are now accustomed to a major earthquake every 70-80 years, and generational revolution every 20 or so years. Yesterday was no different, only this time the trigger-happy government aimed its gun to the chest and heads of protesters, killing 18 youths in Day 1. Many fake news started circulating in unregulated social media platforms like Facebook, which added fuel to the raged public. And as a consequence, we as a Nation lost billions in wealth, historical buildings, and most important of all, the beautiful lives of innocent youths.
Now, let’s discuss the circumstances around tourists and tourism. With airports shut down, restrictions while traveling, and curfew in effect, the first thought of “what next?” comes to everyone’s mind. Foreigners are no exception, in fact, they get worked up even more. Came for a nice time, they did; however, unthinkable happened. Their time and money are wasted. And in this difficult situation, all you want is to leave Nepal, safe and sound.
Fear not, Nepal has always been a genuine host and even in this dire situation they have not forgotten their etiquette. Yes, couple of hotels were vandalized because Gen-Z protesters believed corrupt leaders and their family members were the stakeholders of those properties. But, that was no excuse for your inconvenience. As a Nepalese, I feel ashamed and am deeply sorry that you had to experience such horrendous moment. After all, you were here for some quality time and, we, as a Nation robbed you of one.
As of September 10th, 2025, Nepal army has taken control over the streets. The situation here in Kathmandu has calmed down and we expect to resume our daily lives in about couple of days. I suggest you not to partake in any protests. If you have days to spare, wait and watch. Protesters and military have started the talks. Good times will soon follow. If you want to leave Nepal ASAP, then the good news is security committee have announced that the Kathmandu International Airport will resume its services shortly. By the time this blog goes online, International Airport in Kathmandu would probably have gone operational. All passengers are advised to contact their airlines and have an identification card (Photo ID) with them at all times. I hope you visit some other time and explore the Nature’s gift to the world, Nepal.
I personally feel sucker punched by the timing of this escalation. The tourist season was just about to begin and this happens. The lasting effect of such incidence will be close to grave offense for this industry. I can only wish you forget this ever happened and come back to explore the real Nepal. As someone who owns a travel agency, all I can ask on behalf of Nepal is you give us a second chance.
Here are some tips for the foreigners in Nepal during the GenZ protest and days to come:
- Do not partake in the protest
- Observe but don’t interfere
- Air quality is deteriorating, stay Inside
- Communicate with your loved ones frequently
- People could already be agitated, please act wisely
- Carry your Identification (photo ID) at all times
- Drink a lot of water
- Eat plenty of good food
